At The Green Duck Roofing, we believe a successful roof replacement is a partnership. Our crew is dedicated to a professional, clean, and efficient process from start to finish. While we handle the heavy lifting on your roof, there are a few simple but important steps you, as the homeowner, can take to ensure the day goes smoothly and your property stays protected.
Think of this as your essential pre-roofing checklist! A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a stress-free experience.
1. Protect Your Vehicles: Park Far, Far Away
This is our number one recommendation. During a roof replacement, it’s not uncommon for small pieces of debris, old shingle granules, or even a stray tool to fall from the roof. While our team uses tarps and magnets to control the site, the safest bet for your car, truck, or RV is to move it completely out of the "drop zone."
Action Item: Park your vehicles on the street, in a neighbor's driveway (with permission!), or in a spot well away from the house. This protects your auto finish from scratches and dings and gives our crew a clear path to work.
2. Safeguard Your Landscaping and Yard
We take great care to protect your property, but a roofing project is an active worksite. Falling debris is a normal part of the tear-off process.
Falling Debris: We will cover shrubs and flower beds near the house with sturdy tarps. However, if you have particularly delicate or prized plants, you may want to move portable planters to a safer location.
Ladder & Equipment Path: Be aware that our crew will need clear access to all sides of your roof. This may mean temporarily relocating patio furniture, grills, or children's toys from the yard and away from the siding.
Action Item: Walk the perimeter of your house and move any valuable or fragile outdoor items. This helps us work efficiently and keeps your belongings safe.
3. The Inevitable Nail: A Plan for Cleanup
Even with our industrial-grade magnetic sweepers and meticulous cleanup process, a nail or two can hide in grass or gravel. This is the reality of any roofing project.
Nails in the Yard/Driveway: We perform a thorough magnetic sweep of your entire property, including the driveway and gutters, once the job is complete. However, we highly recommend that you keep children and pets indoors and away from the work area during the project. After we've cleaned up, it's a good practice to do a visual scan of high-traffic areas before letting kids or pets play outside.
Action Item: Inform family members about the project and plan to keep pets leashed or indoors. Be prepared to do a final visual check in the days following the project, especially if you have little ones who play in the yard.
4. Secure Your Home’s Interior
The process of hammering and walking on the roof can create significant vibrations throughout your house. This is completely normal, but it can affect loose items inside.
Vibrations: To prevent items from shaking loose and falling, take a few minutes to walk through your home and secure your valuables.
Wall Decor & Shelves: Take down pictures, mirrors, and art from walls, especially in rooms directly under the roof (top-floor bedrooms, bathrooms, etc.). Check shelves for fragile knick-knacks, vases, or collectibles and either lay them down or move them to a secure location.
Action Item: “Walk the walls" and clear off shelves. A little time spent inside can prevent a broken heirloom or a damaged frame.
5. A Note on Driveway and Road Safety
Our dump trailer and crew vehicles will need to be parked as close to the worksite as possible for efficiency. We will always strive to maintain clear access, but there may be temporary obstructions.
Driveway Access: You will likely not be able to use your driveway for the duration of the project. Please plan accordingly.
Road Debris:While we clean the road in front of your home, small pieces of gravel from the shingles can sometimes be tracked out. We sweep the public roadway as a courtesy, but driving slowly when entering or leaving your property is always advised on project day.
